The LOLpen Strikes Back
Going into tonight’s game, the Mets bullpen was ranked 30th in Major League Baseball with a 5.06 ERA. Their collective performance tonight didn’t help their cause.
The thing of it is, you can’t fault Terry Collins for tonight’s loss. They just didn’t execute. Pulling Gee after 110 pitches and bringing in Captain Fastball is the right thing to do. At least until Parnell hung that knuckle curve and Ruiz gave it a ride. That was pretty much the end of the game right there, but the Rollins home run sealed it. Everything that happened afterwards was just plain cringeworthy.
Props to Ty Wiggington on his series. Ron Darling said it best, “Whatever book the Mets had on Wiggington, they can throw it out after this series.” I’ve always been a big Wiggy fan and always thought he should have stayed and played second after Wright came up and took his job at third base. But it wasn’t meant to be and I like seeing him succeed. Too bad it had to be at the Mets’ expense this time, but he absolutely killed them in all three games.
Lastly, here’s something to ponder. According to Gary Cohen, this year is the first time since 2007 the Mets have had a winning April and May. And that’s with Ike still on the schneid, Pelfrey out for the season, Tejada and Thole on the DL, and a dead last ranked LOLpen. Who knows what they could do with a (relatively) healthy team?
Bring on the Redbirds.
